A group of paddleboarders at Sandbanks is sending a strong message – black cats deserve love and homes, just like their feline counterparts in other colors. These enthusiasts, donned in Halloween outfits, hit the waters on a mission to challenge the stigma associated with black cats while raising funds for Paula’s Cat Rescue in Poole.
Elaine Williams, paddleboard instructor, and the event organizer, has witnessed the unfortunate impact of black cat stereotypes firsthand. She shared the story of her own black cat, Teddy, who endured six months of harsh winter conditions under a shed before being rescued by Paula’s Cat Rescue.
Elaine explained, “And Teddy, being black, we then started learning more about black cats and historically they will be in a rescue center many weeks more than any other cat. This is for various reasons: one is, sadly, they’ve still got historical associations with witches, and also if a black cat crosses your path, it’s considered bad luck.”
Moreover, rescuers often find black cats less photogenic, which hampers their chances of being adopted. Determined to counter these misconceptions, Elaine rallied fellow black cat owners and, together, they have raised nearly £700 for the charity.
“We want to see black cats. They’re still as special and as loving as any other cats,” Elaine emphasized.
Lesley Williams, Elaine’s sister and Teddy’s co-owner, echoed the sentiment, highlighting that black cats are not only misunderstood but are also loving and wonderful companions.
Bobbi White, dressed as a witch, chimed in, stating, “They’re not as photogenic, they’re all a bit dotty, but we love them. They’re beautiful.”
In the UK and Western world, black cats are often associated with Halloween and superstitions. However, they can also bring good luck in certain traditions, such as giving a black cat to a bride on her wedding day in England.
Charity organization Cats Protection offers guidance on capturing the perfect photograph of a black cat, suggesting the right background, proper lighting, and exposure adjustments to showcase their beauty.
