In a remarkable tale of survival, a neighborhood cat named Mamoa, who braved the devastating Maui fires, is now poised for adoption in the Sacramento region.
Mamoa’s journey began in early September when he was initially found trapped within the fire-ravaged zone. Rescuers, initially presuming him to be a feral cat, were in for a heartwarming surprise as Mamoa’s true disposition revealed his background.
The FieldHaven Feline Center, an organization dedicated to feline rescue, played a pivotal role in Mamoa’s rescue and subsequent adoption journey. They diligently chronicled Mamoa’s story in the hopes that a Lahaina resident might recognize him. Their efforts paid off as a Lahaina resident came forward with recognition.
Joy Smith, the executive director and co-founder of FieldHaven, recounted the moment of recognition, stating, “She turned her phone to me, displaying the profile picture of L557 on Facebook. She said, ‘we called this cat Mamoa, and he was often in our backyard in Lahaina.'”
Tragically, Mamoa’s neighborhood fell victim to the destructive Maui fires, leaving him without a place to call home. Consequently, the cat was entrusted to the care of the Maui Humane Society.
FieldHaven has since taken Mamoa under its wing, and after an incredible journey, this resilient feline is set to embark on the next chapter of his life. Mamoa is due to arrive at Sacramento International Airport on Wednesday night and will soon be available for adoption.
Mamoa’s tale is a testament to the enduring spirit of our feline friends and the unwavering dedication of organizations like FieldHaven, who work tirelessly to ensure the welfare and well-being of animals in need.
