The Ontario Provincial Police have issued a public warning regarding the escape of a medium-sized African cat from a sanctuary located in Bonnechere Valley Township. The incident unfolded around 8:45 a.m. on a Wednesday when officers and members of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services team responded to a report of an African serval cat that had escaped in the vicinity of Corrigan Road, near Silver Lake, west of Ottawa.
This escapee is described as weighing approximately 11 to 13 kilograms, bearing a distinctive spotted coat, and having pointed ears. Authorities have cautioned that this animal is capable of attacking mid-sized livestock and pets, making it a potential risk to the local community.
The public is urged to exercise caution if they encounter this cat and to promptly report any sightings to the police. The owner of the cat, Kim Rock, proprietor of Waddles ‘n’ Wags Zoological Haven in Eganville, Ont., has expressed concern for the animal’s well-being. The cat, known as Gizmo, managed to escape while efforts were underway to relocate him to his winter quarters earlier in the week.
Although the exact cause of Gizmo’s escape remains uncertain, Rock mentioned that something had spooked him, leading to a crate break. She clarified that Gizmo should not pose a threat to cats and dogs, as he was raised alongside them. However, the same cannot be said for chickens, given the serval cat’s natural hunting instincts.
Serval cats are known for their remarkable hunting abilities, and Gizmo is expected to rely on these skills to find food. Yet, with winter approaching, there are concerns about his survival in the wild. Gizmo’s owner is eager to see him safely returned to the sanctuary.
