Residents in the Sydney suburb of Malabar were left in shock after an Australian woman’s cat, named Remy, became ensnared in a steel-jawed trap. The concerned owner shared distressing images of her injured pet, who miraculously managed to drag herself home with her foot still trapped in the cruel device. This incident has raised significant concerns about the potential danger such traps pose, not only to pets but also to children.
In a heartfelt online post, the cat’s owner pleaded, “Someone in Malabar set this trap that my cat got caught in. She managed to drag it by her caught paw home… Who in Malabar is setting these traps?” The distressing photographs of Remy’s ordeal have garnered widespread attention and empathy from the community.
NSW Police and Rescue swiftly responded to the scene to rescue the injured feline. Once freed from the trap, Remy was promptly transported to a local animal hospital for essential care. The cat’s owner, expressing her disbelief at the incident, revealed, “Vets are trying to save her leg but looks like it may need to be amputated. Just can’t believe this happened in Malabar.” She concluded her Facebook post with a heartfelt plea for local residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant for their safety.
The incident has ignited concerns about the potential harm such traps could inflict on not only pets but also young children. One resident voiced this concern, stating, “Imagine if a young child had been caught in this,” echoing the sentiments of many other alarmed locals.
Council Takes Action
In response to the distressing incident, Randwick City Council Mayor Dylan Parker has pledged efforts to prevent similar occurrences in the future. “This is very concerning. On my request, Randwick City Council rangers are stepping up patrols in the area in response and have been tasked to search for any additional traps,” Mr. Parker assured.
Plea to Cat Owners
Kristina Vesk of the Cat Protection Society expressed her profound horror at the incident, emphasizing the extreme pain and trauma experienced by Remy. She urged cat owners to keep their feline companions confined to their properties or indoors to prevent such distressing incidents from occurring.
