Dedicated to the welfare of animals, Brooklin Hamilton has always demonstrated a deep compassion for creatures in need.
“I have a genuine love for animals and a strong desire to make their lives better,” said Hamilton.
During July, numerous stray cats that often sought refuge on her porch for nourishment and care began disappearing without a trace.
Recently, the truth came to light.
“While we were sitting inside, my cousin was watching a video on Facebook. She turned to me and said, ‘This is Pumpkin,’ and as I watched, I had to quickly put down my phone,” recounted Hamilton.
According to Hamilton, the video was profoundly distressing to watch.
The video depicted a helpless cat ensnared in a trap. One individual was shown thrusting an object into the cage, while another filmed the incident, laughing callously. At the conclusion of the video, one voice was heard saying, “Next one, please.”
Hamilton mentioned that the video was initially shared on Snapchat, but a concerned member of the community recorded it and posted it on Facebook, condemning the cruel act.
“It shattered my heart to witness such cruelty towards an innocent cat that was gentle and only sought love,” expressed Hamilton.
Following the identification of the individuals involved, the authorities apprehended 20-year-old Gabriel Messer and a juvenile.
During police interviews, the juvenile explained that his intention was to “end the cat’s suffering.”
“My cat was not suffering,” Hamilton retorted, noting that the cat appeared healthy and had access to sufficient food and water.
As further charges are anticipated against the accused, Hamilton is concerned about potential repercussions.
“It’s truly frightening, not knowing what they might do next.”
Undeterred, Hamilton plans to persist in caring for strays and aims to spotlight instances of animal abuse that she believes often go unnoticed in eastern Kentucky.
