A new bill introduced in Minnesota seeks to outlaw the practice of declawing cats, a procedure often done by owners to prevent scratches on furniture or themselves. The proposed legislation would make it illegal to declaw cats, unless the procedure is done for therapeutic reasons.
The bill, presented before a Minnesota Senate committee on Monday, was authored by Senator Zaynab Mohamed, who expressed her strong support for cats. “I love cats. I think most people in our state love cats,” said Mohamed, DFL-Minneapolis. “I am a cat lover. I like dogs, but I am a cat lady.”
Under the bill, violators would face fines — $500 for a first offense, $1,000 for a second offense, and $2,500 for a third or subsequent violation.
Although the bill was not voted on, it was laid over in committee, meaning it still has a chance to progress further in the legislative process.
