People are sharing the toxic traits of their cats, and the responses are as entertaining as they are relatable.
Although felines may be adorable and cuddly, they certainly aren’t without their flaws. Their quirky habits and unique personalities can sometimes be a source of frustration. Luckily, a Reddit post revealed that cats across the world seem to share some common toxic traits.
In a thread on the subreddit r/cats, user themoonandme asked fellow cat owners to share the toxic traits of their cats, sharing an example from her own feline. The answers that followed were nothing short of amusing.
One cat owner shared with Newsweek via Reddit that their cat, Nova, is affectionately referred to as their “magic kitty” since she was born during a solar eclipse. Nova’s story began when her mother, a pregnant stray, was taken in by the owner. After an unsuccessful search for the mother’s original home, they brought her to a local shelter. However, the mother managed to escape during transport and made her way back to the owner’s house, a few miles away. The family kept the mother and one kitten, Nova, while finding homes for the rest of the litter.
Now living in comfort, Nova has adopted a royal demeanor and shows little concern for the mess she creates. Her owner explained on Reddit: “This is Nova, and her toxic trait is that she loves to drop her toys in her water bowl and then bring them to me on the bed absolutely soaked—leaving wet spots all over my bedding.”
The Reddit post quickly gained traction, amassing over 9,500 upvotes and nearly 2,000 comments by Monday afternoon. Many other cat owners chimed in, sharing their cats’ toxic traits as well.
One owner wrote about their cat, Black Bean, whose toxic trait is his constant desire for attention. Despite yelling for attention, Black Bean runs away when his humans try to engage with him. However, he only accepts pets while on a specific pet hammock or cat tree of his choosing.
Another owner revealed that their cat’s toxic trait is an obsessive need to stick its paws into everything—cups, cup holders, under seat cushions, and even trash bins.
For one owner, a toxic trait manifested as their cat’s complete disregard for personal space, with the cat getting very close to their face and sneezing on them.
Another shared that their cat’s toxic trait is an insatiable appetite for any piece of plastic or trash it can find.
On a more personal note, the reporter shared that their own two cats also have their fair share of frustrating behaviors. One of their cats, Willow, is a tortoiseshell with a well-known “tortitude.” Her toxic trait revolves around mealtime—she can sense when it’s time to eat and will cause a ruckus the moment her humans are a minute late. Willow has been known to knock items off the desk, including glasses and water bottles, when hungry. If the humans are watching TV, she’ll scratch at the couch, fully aware that it will get them to rise and feed her.
The reporter’s other cat, George, a kitten, has an obsession with food. Rescued from a trashcan with his littermates, George’s toxic trait is constantly going after the food of both his human family members and Willow. Although the cats are fed at the same time, George eats quickly and then rushes to steal Willow’s food. He will push her out of the way to devour as much as he can until the humans intervene.
After several messy incidents, the humans have learned to keep a watchful eye on Willow’s mealtime. They also avoid letting George eat her adult food, which doesn’t sit well in his stomach, as they’ve had to clean up after him more times than they’d like.
It seems the struggles of living with a cat’s toxic traits are universal, making cat owners everywhere feel a little less alone in their feline frustrations.
