Buzz, a 13-year-old cat, has been taken in by Cats Protection Colne Valley, which covers the Essex areas of Halstead, Braintree, Colchester, and Witham, following the death of his owner.
This elderly cat had been with his owner since he was a kitten, and understandably, he was deeply unsettled by the loss.
Thanks to Cats Protection’s Cat Guardians program, Buzz was assured a place in care.
Initially, Buzz was placed at a Cats Protection center. However, the bustling environment made it difficult for him to grieve properly.
He was later moved to a quieter home with a volunteer fosterer.
The fosterer shared, “When Buzz arrived, he was stressed and mourning the loss of his owner. For ten days, he hid under the chaise, only coming out for food or when we weren’t around.”
“I read to him daily, and as he became familiar with my voice and presence, he began seeking affection. This distinguished gentleman, who has a black coat with a touch of grey, quickly turned into a loving companion, purring non-stop, licking my fingers, and giving me a cheeky wink.”
Despite his age, Buzz remains quite “sprightly.”
Although Buzz requires medication to manage his epilepsy, he has been seizure-free since November.
Used to a calm environment, Cats Protection is now looking for an adult-only home for Buzz, where he can be the center of attention.
Unfortunately, many cats are abandoned after the death of their owner, which prompted Cats Protection to create the Cat Guardians service.
This service ensures that cats are cared for after their owner’s death.
By including a simple clause in a will, people can register for the free Cat Guardians service, ensuring their cats are looked after when they are gone. After the owner’s death, Cats Protection takes responsibility for the cat and finds it a loving new home.
Cats Protection Colne Valley operates entirely through volunteers, and they are constantly looking for fellow cat lovers to join their cause.
They are particularly in need of fosterers, as well as volunteers who can help transport cats or assist with social media.
Joanne McPherson, the branch development manager, commented, “Colne Valley is a welcoming group, united by a love for cats and a desire to help both cats and kittens in need, as well as supporting owners with their cherished pets.”
“We urgently need more fosterers to help with our work in the community. Fosterers welcome cats into their homes and care for them until they find a permanent home.”
“Training is provided, and all expenses, including food, bedding, and vet visits, are covered.”
“Knowing you’ve helped a cat through a tough time and given them a chance at a safe and happy future is incredibly rewarding.”
