For generations, dogs and cats have been portrayed as natural enemies. While it’s true that many dogs chase cats due to their strong hunting instincts, this behavior is not born out of a dislike for the species. Similarly, when cats hiss and swat at dogs, they are simply defending themselves, just as they would with any other animal. It’s nothing personal!
In reality, dogs and cats can get along wonderfully, and they can even become best friends. Lucy, a yellow Labrador mix, and her feline brother Creamsicle are perfect examples of this, as demonstrated in a heartwarming TikTok video shared on March 5. While it’s common for these two to play together, their mom was amazed to see the pup interacting with the orange cat—cat toy included—just like a human child would!
Lucy’s clever antics left everyone in awe. The Labrador mix appeared to know exactly what she was doing, even showing off the toy to her mom with evident pride.
One commenter, @carynfavero, praised Lucy’s intelligence: “Lucy is so smart! She waits for the cat to catch up; she’s figuring it all out.” It’s clear that Lucy’s behavior shows an understanding of how to play, possibly influenced by watching her human family interact with the toy in similar ways. Dogs, after all, are incredibly observant, even when it may seem like they aren’t paying attention.
In addition to Lucy’s heartwarming interaction with her cat brother, the family’s Red Heeler mix, Floki, also enjoys watching the playtime. As one commenter noted, “Floki is so happy just being a part of the game, even though he’s not sure what’s going on.” This playful dynamic shows that many dogs, even if unsure about the details, enjoy being involved as long as they’re included in the fun.
While many were impressed by Lucy’s clever behavior, it’s worth noting that Labrador Retrievers, although known for being intelligent, are not at the top of the list of the smartest dog breeds. That honor belongs to the Border Collie, a herding breed that thrives on challenges and tasks.
Border Collies are highly versatile and motivated dogs, making excellent companions for active pet owners and top candidates for roles such as farm dogs, livestock guardians, and herders. They are eager to please, but a bored Border Collie can lead to behavioral issues. To keep them happy and well-behaved, Border Collie owners must commit to obedience training, early socialization, and a variety of stimulating activities.
Although Lucy and her siblings are not Border Collies, they have clearly demonstrated their intelligence through the way they connect with their family members, no matter the species. Whether they’re playing together or simply napping in the same room, Lucy, Creamsicle, and their siblings certainly know how to express their love.
