More than 55 cats rescued by Corpus Christi Animal Care Services officers from a rental property on North Padre Island are now in need of new homes.
The rescue took place on Monday at a home on Main Royal Drive. Officers had initially responded to a report on February 25 about 30 cats possibly being abandoned at the location, according to an official statement from Animal Care Services.
Upon arriving at the property, the officers found the cats in various stages of health. They are currently assessing the medical needs of each cat.
Animal Care Services is collaborating with rescue partners to find homes for the cats through adoption or rescue once their five-day holding period concludes, the statement said.
The agency confirmed that during their first visit on February 25, they discovered the home abandoned, with numerous cats found on the property. The officers placed a notice of violation on the homeowner’s door.
Later that day, the property owner informed Animal Care Services that the cats had been released from the house. However, when officers returned on February 26, they discovered that most of the cats had been confined within a fenced-in backyard behind the residence.
The statement noted that the cats appeared to have respiratory issues, which is common in hoarding situations. However, the agency assured the public that the condition posed no risk to humans or other animals.
On February 27, Animal Care Services officers, along with Corpus Christi police and staff from the city’s Code Compliance Division, returned to the property and found the same situation.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Caller-Times had not confirmed the reasons why the cats were left at the residence.
