Just Us Cat & Kitten Rescue has recently awarded a $2,500 grant to provide free spay/neuter services for 100 community cats at the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) facility in Georgetown.
The rescue will once again partner with the Brandywine Valley SPCA and Last Chance Animal Rescue (LCAR) in Waldorf, Md., for this vital initiative. Each Wednesday, Just Us volunteers work with the BVSPCA’s veterinarians and tech staff, running three critical programs. Volunteers are responsible for registering cats and kittens for the spay/neuter program, preparing them for transport to the Maryland rescue group, and managing an evaluation program for potential transport candidates.
Bob Harrison, president of Just Us, oversees the weekly operations, supported by volunteers including Ellie Mayhew, president of the Dewey Beach Feral Cat Society, and Clare Mace of Cats Around Town, who serve the Ocean View and Dagsboro areas. In 2024, Just Us funded a total of 1,004 spay/neuter surgeries at the BVSPCA.
The partnership with LCAR is essential to the mission of Just Us, as their programs offer additional opportunities for feline adoptions. Last year, Just Us successfully transported nearly 1,000 cats and kittens to LCAR, alongside local adoptions facilitated by a network of foster volunteers.
Just Us also collaborates with the Cat Nippers of Long Neck/Pot-Nets to conduct low-cost vaccine clinics. In 2024, these clinics provided services to more than 700 dogs and cats, and in 2025, the clinics will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month, excluding August and December. Upcoming dates are: March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, September 14, October 12, and November 9. More details on the services can be found on the Just Us Facebook page.
In a new initiative for 2025, Just Us will support the BVSPCA’s cat food bank with regular donations to assist the community. In January, the organization contributed 1,000 pounds of cat food to the Georgetown facility.
Founded in 2006, Just Us is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on spaying and neutering community cats, especially in eastern Sussex County. The group’s mission includes trap/neuter/return (TNR) programs, as well as facilitating the adoption of friendly cats and kittens into loving homes. Volunteers also provide assistance to distressed cats, help with fostering and transporting cats, and contribute to the community’s food supply needs.
