A courageous crew of Dublin firefighters has been honored with a prestigious “Hero to Animals” award from Peta for their quick actions in saving the life of a cat.
The heroic rescue took place last month when firefighters from Dolphin’s Barn were called to a fire in Ballyfermot. As they worked to control the blaze, a crew with breathing apparatus discovered an unconscious cat named Biscuit.
Firefighter Carrick immediately took action, placing a pet oxygen mask on the unresponsive animal. After about 10 minutes of treatment, Biscuit regained consciousness. Along with Biscuit, a budgie and a dog were also rescued by the brave team.
In recognition of their bravery, Peta, the global animal protection organization, awarded the firefighters with the “Hero to Animals” title. Elisa Allen of Peta expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanks to these firefighters’ heroic actions, what could have been a tragedy for Biscuit had a happy ending. We hope their compassionate deed will inspire others to help animals in need.”
The “Hero to Animals” award plaque, signed by Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk, reads: “Peta recognises and commends D Watch, Dolphin’s Barn Dublin Fire Brigade for bravely rescuing Biscuit the cat, who was trapped in a burning house and resuscitating him with oxygen. May this act of kindness inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
In addition, Peta is urging all pet owners to develop a plan for their animals in case of emergencies, like fires. They encourage having pet carriers available and posting signs on doors or windows to alert rescuers to the presence of pets.
Dublin Fire Brigade is currently trialling pet oxygen masks and aims to implement them citywide in the near future. At the time of the rescue, a spokesperson for the brigade said, “Firefighter ‘Paw’amedic Carrick placed a pet oxygen mask on Biscuit, and after 10 minutes, Biscuit was snuggling into its owner. A budgie and dog were also taken to safety.”
