A cat owner from Staveley in the Lake District has expressed his distress over a mystery individual who has been repeatedly clipping his pet’s fur, leaving the animal “traumatized.”
Billy Cooper revealed that his cat, Spike, has been trimmed unwantedly more than 10 times, and it’s not just his pet affected—his neighbor’s cat has been targeted as well.
“It’s not just us, it’s happening to our neighbor’s cat too,” Cooper said.
According to Mr. Cooper, Spike’s behavior has drastically changed since the trims. The cat, once friendly, has become “very grumpy” after each grooming session, and now avoids going outside, showing signs of distress.
“I’ve lost count of how many times this has happened. It seems to happen every four to five months,” Cooper shared in an interview with BBC Radio Cumbria.
He explained that Spike has a mane, which is consistently cut too short, leaving him upset. “He’s always very grumpy after it’s done and avoids going out. It’s like it’s traumatizing him.”
In an attempt to address the issue, Cooper posted on a local Facebook group, asking the mystery barber to stop harming his cat. “I don’t understand why they’re doing this, as it’s not like Spike isn’t well-groomed. He looks presentable,” Cooper added, expressing confusion over the bizarre behavior.
Although he considered putting a tracker on Spike to monitor his movements, Mr. Cooper said the expense was impractical, especially since the person has been removing the cat’s collar. “It would be easy for them to take the tracker off and throw it away somewhere,” he explained.
“We just want them to stop. Spike is a much-loved family pet, and we need a logical explanation for why they feel the need to do this,” Cooper concluded.
