Jeremy Corbyn has shared the heartbreaking news of the death of his cherished cat, El Gato, in an emotional social media post.
The Islington North MP expressed his deep sadness over the passing of his pet on Sunday, stating that it has left him grieving.
El Gato’s name, which translates to simply “the cat” in Spanish, was a beloved part of Corbyn’s life.
The former Labour leader had previously included El Gato in his Christmas cards and even mentioned plans to bring him to Number 10 had he won the 2019 general election. Just weeks before the election, he told the Evening Standard in an interview: “But there’s the question of what happens to the cat, of course.”
When asked if El Gato could simply join him at No. 10, Corbyn responded: “Yes, but cats tend to be very territorial.”
In his heartfelt message posted on X late Monday evening, Corbyn wrote: “It is with great sadness that I have to announce that El Gato died on Sunday. He gave joy to many throughout his life. He was happy, gentle, and full of personality. Life will not be the same without El Gato’s company and friendship. We will miss him dearly.”
