A cat owner has shared a humorous glimpse into life with a greedy cat, and it seems she’s not the only one dealing with this behavior.
In a TikTok video (@littlemissjinxie), a black-and-white fluffy cat named Jinxie is seen walking over to her bowl before sitting next to it and casting a “glaring” look at her owner, who had just opened a bag of rice.
The text over the video reads: “Every time I open a packet of anything, she thinks it is for her. Girl, I am not giving you my Mexican rice.”
With the caption, “Why is she glaring at me like that?” the video quickly went viral, amassing over 323,000 views, 49,000 likes, and sparking many comments from fellow cat owners sharing similar experiences.
“I opened a face mask the other day, and my cat ran at me screaming,” said one user. Another wrote: “Every time I get out a tin of beans, she thinks it’s tuna and comes sprinting.”
“I opened a sanitary towel, and my cat thought it was for her,” said another commenter.
Some users shared their approach of letting their cats sniff everything to confirm it’s not food. “I let my cats sniff everything I have so they know it’s not for them,” one person commented.
However, this strategy doesn’t work with Jinxie. Her owner replied to another user, “I try to do that, as any other cat I’ve had usually goes, ‘Okay, ew, you’re right,’ but she just sticks her head in more.”
While it seems some cats are eager to explore non-food items, Dr. Debra Zoran, a professor of medicine at Texas A&M University, previously explained to Newsweek what a cat’s proper diet should consist of.
“The diet should be complete and balanced, as you’re providing for them what they would naturally get,” Zoran said. “Each cat is unique, just like people, with specific taste preferences, dietary needs, or nutrient requirements.”
Zoran emphasized that cats are “obligate carnivores,” meaning meat is essential for their diet, as they cannot produce taurine, an important amino acid, on their own.
In Jinxie’s case, she’s eager to try anything within her reach, but fortunately, her owner can still resist those adorable, pleading looks.
Teresa Keiger, an all-breed judge for the Cat Fanciers’ Association, also previously told Newsweek about foods cats should avoid. These include chocolate, certain fruits, and, surprisingly, milk. “Cats are lactose intolerant, so avoid giving them milk or milk products,” she advised.
