Bucharest has launched an innovative recycling initiative that benefits stray animals. In Tineretului, Floreasca, and Circului parks, eco-friendly vending machines have been installed to provide food and water to stray cats in exchange for recyclable bottles and aluminum cans.
“Street cats face tough conditions, especially during the winter months. Access to food is critical for their survival. To feed the cats, all you have to do is insert a bottle or an aluminum can, and the machine will release food,” explained the Bucharest Authority for Animal Surveillance and Protection (ASPA).
These machines not only aid stray animals but also promote recycling. They feature information about dog adoption, encouraging animal lovers to offer a home to a pet in need.
The vending machines are solar-powered and stocked with food donated by the American organization Greater Good Charities.
This pilot project is a collaboration between the Sache Vet Association and ASPA, funded by the Bucharest City Hall’s budget, and supported by the Bucharest Lakes, Parks, and Recreation Administration (ALPAB).
