On Wednesday, Oscar, the famous tabby cat from Stowmarket, passed away after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, as confirmed by his owner. Oscar, known for his charming habit of jumping into car boots and waiting for customers at the Cedar Links Road Tesco store, had become a beloved figure in the town.
In tribute to the feline who touched so many hearts, flowers are now being placed in the store’s foyer, where Oscar would often be found resting. Along with the flowers, heartfelt letters have been left by visitors expressing their sorrow and saying goodbye to the cherished cat.
Simon Pierce from Bury St Edmunds shared his sadness: “I’m completely heartbroken, and he wasn’t even my cat. Time heals everything, but for now, I’m okay with being very sad. Oscar became part of our shopping routine. It was always amazing to see him, and disappointing when we didn’t. For those who find shopping a chore, he likely lifted their spirits. I’ll probably shed a tear for a few weeks when I visit the store. Goodbye, dear Oscar. Sleep well.”
Gary Robinson, 57, a Tesco employee who plans to organize a pub quiz in Oscar’s honor, said: “Oscar has been with Tesco for as long as I can remember. I’ve been with Tesco for nearly five years now, and I saw him every day. I’ve decided to host a charity quiz for Kitty Kat Rescue, a local charity, in Oscar’s name.”
Eleanor Abbott, 19, from Stowmarket, reflected on the cat’s daily presence: “He would follow us around the shop every day, and when we packed the car, he would sit in the boot. He was very much loved by everyone, and he will be missed.”
