East Coast Pet Rescue, a self-funded organization operating three cattery pens in a volunteer’s garden in Hemsby, faced significant challenges after heavy rainfall on January 1 caused severe flooding.
The deluge, exacerbated by a damaged roof, turned all three pens into “one big puddle,” forcing the evacuation of three cats and rendering the space unusable.
A spokeswoman for the rescue described the extent of the damage: “The pens were completely flooded. Water was pouring from the lights, plug sockets were dripping, electric radiators were soaked, and the floors were entirely submerged.”
The flood also damaged essential supplies, including heat mats, paperwork, and cat furniture.
In response, the rescue is working to secure estimates for roof repairs to prevent future flooding.
“We also need an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) to ensure the electrics are safe,” the spokeswoman explained. “Additionally, we must replace damaged items such as heat mats and other supplies.”
The rescue is appealing for support to cover these costs. “Any help towards the expenses would be greatly appreciated. As always, we’ll continue fundraising and welcome any good-quality donations we can sell to raise funds,” she added.
The situation has highlighted the challenges faced by the rescue, which remains committed to its mission despite the setbacks.
