Outrage has erupted on social media following reports of several cats allegedly being killed and mutilated on the Universiti Malaya (UM) campus.
Instagram user @shimaaris has been vocal about the disturbing incidents, claiming that at least three cats, including a pet named Lily, have been killed. In a series of posts, @shimaaris urged the university to launch a full investigation into the matter, expressing concern that more victims may be out there.
“There could be more of them (but) we can’t see their bodies,” she wrote, demanding accountability. On Friday, December 20, she posted, “Another dead cat this morning at UM… this is clearly not caused by dogs! What (is being) covered up?”
Reports indicate that two cats were discovered dead on December 12 and December 16, with initial media claims suggesting that stray dogs might have been responsible. Photographs circulating online show the carcass of one cat with a large gash on its body and all four paws missing, fueling further concerns.
However, @shimaaris, an advocate against animal cruelty, has rejected the idea that dogs were to blame. She pointed out that dogs typically attack the body rather than mutilating limbs, calling the accusation a convenient excuse to blame defenseless animals.
“Easy for you to blame voiceless animals when they cannot… defend themselves. Dogs do not chew off only (the) limbs. They go straight to the body,” she stated in a post. “Show us the evidence before you go around (killing) all the defenceless stray dogs in the area.”
Veterinarian Salehatul Khuzaimah M. Ali, also known as @dr.ima_vet on Instagram, shared her own discovery of a cat killed in a similar manner, further raising alarms about the pattern of violence.
The shocking reports have sparked widespread calls for justice, with social media users expressing horror at the brutality. One user, kathirgamatamb, described the killings as “the work of a psychopath,” while others condemned the acts as “demonic” and refuted the claims that stray dogs were responsible for the mutilations.
The growing outrage has prompted a call for the university to take immediate action and conduct a thorough investigation into the disturbing killings.
