A cat sanctuary near Stratford-upon-Avon has successfully raised nearly £13,000 after a devastating incident during Storm Darragh. A large tree branch fell on a newly-built pen, causing significant damage and allowing five rescued cats to escape.
According to Avon Cat Rescue, three of the cats have since been found, while efforts continue to locate the remaining two.
Rosemary Spicer, a trustee of the sanctuary, described the incident: “A huge branch from an old tree fell directly onto one of our cat pens, completely demolishing it. There were five cats inside, and they all disappeared.”
The sanctuary turned to Facebook for support, posting an appeal for donations to repair the damage. A recent update shared by the sanctuary reads: “Three traumatised cats have been found. Two are still missing.”
Ms. Spicer recounted the ordeal, mentioning one cat found frozen in fear amidst the destruction: “One cat was still there, too frightened to move, but he is safe now. It must have been terrifying for them. Unfortunately, clearing the area with chainsaws and tree surgeons will add to their stress.”
She also noted that the pen, which had recently been constructed at a cost of several thousand pounds, featured new electrics and lighting.
Following their online appeal, Ms. Spicer expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: “The community has been incredibly generous. Builders and tree surgeons have offered their services for free. People have even volunteered to temporarily house the cats. It’s heartwarming to see such kindness.”
