Cassie Gould, widely recognized as a key figure at Butlers Wine Cellar in Kemptown, has long been a supporter of local charities. Over the years, she has dedicated herself to raising funds and awareness for various causes, from The Crew Club in Whitehawk to Cancer Research UK. Her deep-rooted love for animals has recently drawn her attention to the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare in East Sussex.
“From a very young age, my family instilled in me the importance of caring for animals,” Cassie shared. “Our home was a haven for creatures in need—dogs, cats, a tortoise we found by the roadside, and even a swan named Charlie, who we nursed back to health. Charlie would poke his head through the cat flap for food. My mother also rescued horses, and I was riding a rescued Shire horse at just three years old.”
Despite her passion, Cassie’s demanding hospitality career made it difficult to care for pets. However, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted her perspective.
“During lockdown, I noticed the surge in demand for pets as people started working from home. Unfortunately, many breeders exploited this demand, leading to an increase in untrained and unsocialized dogs. When life returned to normal, countless animals were neglected or abandoned,” she said.
During this period, Cassie’s husband, Henry, received a prostate cancer diagnosis. “It was a difficult time for us,” Cassie reflected. “Then, a cat appeared on our doorstep. She sat there for six weeks, crying to be let in. Despite my initial hesitation, I eventually gave in. That cat changed our lives, bringing comfort and joy during Henry’s treatment.”
Inspired by the cat’s impact, Cassie turned her focus to helping more neglected animals, leading her to support the Raystede Centre. In May 2021, she participated in their “50 Miles in May” challenge to raise funds. A chance encounter during the challenge connected her with Pepper, a rescue Staffie from Raystede. Walking Pepper inspired Cassie to delve deeper into rescue work and eventually adopt a dog herself.
Finding a cat-friendly rescue dog proved challenging, but in November 2023, Cassie received an urgent call about a Maltese in dire need. “This dog had been exploited by breeders and discarded when she could no longer produce. Emaciated and in poor health, she was destined for euthanasia until rescued,” Cassie recounted.
She named the dog Bubbles, symbolizing sparkling wine and paying homage to Absolutely Fabulous. After spaying, extensive dental work, and ongoing care, Bubbles began her journey to recovery. “Her transformation has been both heartbreaking and heartwarming. She’s now my constant companion, and it’s a privilege to give her the future she deserves,” Cassie said.
Now serving as an ambassador for Raystede, Cassie helps provide sanctuary and new homes for unwanted animals, from ducks and rabbits to goats and dogs. “Many animals are surrendered due to financial struggles, neglect, or abuse. Thankfully, Raystede’s incredible team offers the medical and emotional support these animals need,” she explained.
Cassie encourages potential pet owners to adopt from rescues. “There are so many wonderful animals waiting for homes. Choose compassion over convenience—adopt, don’t shop.”
Cassie continues her “50 Miles” challenge monthly with her rescue companions, Pepper and Bubbles, along with other rescue dogs. “So far, we’ve raised over £600! Rain or shine, we’re out walking, and we won’t stop until our mission is complete,” she said.
