A heartwarming reunion between a young girl with cerebral palsy and her long-lost cat was made possible through a cross-country trip, a car repair shop, and the kindness of a loving family. The cat had been missing for a year and a half, but the bond between the two was finally restored in an unexpected way.
The journey began in June 2023 when a couple traveling across the country stopped in Bettendorf, Iowa. They heard faint meowing coming from their truck but couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from. Concerned, they took their vehicle to Ace Auto Doctor & Repair to investigate.
“They knew something was off but couldn’t find the cat, so they looked us up online and brought it here,” said Niki Dahl, the service advisor at the shop.
At the shop, Dustin Goff, the manager and owner, discovered the cat trapped in the frame of the truck. “She was stuck in the back passenger corner, near the fuel tank, and didn’t want to come down. It took a couple of us to get her out,” Goff explained.
Once freed, the cat immediately cuddled up to Goff, and he couldn’t bring himself to send her to a shelter. “She was so friendly and didn’t want to leave me. I decided to take her to my farm, where she could live with me,” Goff said.
Months later, during a routine veterinary visit, a microchip revealed the cat’s connection to a family in Montana. The cat was identified as belonging to a young girl named Neji, who had been living without her companion for over a year and a half. Neji’s cat had gone missing from her grandfather’s home in Nebraska while the family was away on a short trip to New York.
“It’s so special because of the bond my granddaughter has with this cat. Finding her after all this time was unbelievable. I couldn’t get in the car fast enough,” said Richard Tolsted, Neji’s grandfather.
Tolsted traveled to Bettendorf to collect the cat from the auto shop on Friday. He decided to keep the reunion a secret, planning to surprise Neji.
The moment Neji was reunited with her cat was captured in photos, showing her beaming with happiness. “It was amazing to be able to return the cat to the little girl,” Goff shared. “That’s my favorite part of the whole story.”
Dahl also shared her emotional reaction: “It brings tears to my eyes. It’s so heartwarming. It’s just adorable.”
Neji’s family had adopted the cat at an event in Salt Lake City, where nearly 400 other pets also found new homes. They had named her Utah, after the state where they got her.
This touching reunion highlights the extraordinary bond between pets and their owners, as well as the power of community kindness and dedication to bringing lost pets home.
