An overweight cat is winning hearts across the internet for her hilarious attempt to sneak into her slimmer sibling’s mealtime, leaving viewers in stitches.
Kalie Chu, a stay-at-home mom from Las Vegas, Nevada, recently shared a video of her larger cat, Sasha, trying to muscle in on her skinnier cat Sage’s food. The clip quickly went viral, racking up over 830,900 likes and 18.7 million views.
“I feed my cats Sasha and Sage every morning. Sasha is on a weight loss journey since I adopted her a year ago. She still waddles a bit when she walks, which I find adorable. I thought it would be funny to film her coming into the kitchen for breakfast because you can really see the love she has for food in her eyes,” Chu told Newsweek.
Sasha’s backstory is both heartwarming and inspiring. Before being adopted, Sasha suffered abuse in her previous home, which left her unable to walk or groom herself properly. Since being adopted, she’s lost 14 pounds and has shown significant improvement, with no major health issues.
In the video, Chu attempts to feed Sage, her “skinny” British shorthair, but Sasha catches wind of the meal and waddles into the kitchen. “Sasha doesn’t actually steal food from Sage. I’ve tested it, and she’s always willing to share. If I only put one bowl down, she doesn’t mind sharing with Sage,” Chu explained. “Sasha is always on high alert at meal time, so it’s impossible to sneak food to Sage without Sasha knowing.”
Despite her weight loss, Sasha’s love for food is unmistakable. “Sasha knows exactly when it’s time to eat. She always listens for the sound of food being prepared, so sneaking treats for Sage is a challenge,” Chu added.
Sasha and Sage, who has been part of the family for five months, share a playful and loving relationship. “They’re like sisters—teasing each other but always showing affection in the end,” said Chu.
Chu also shared tips for managing Sasha’s weight loss journey, noting that gradual changes are key to avoiding health issues. The website Cats Protection recommends portion control, scheduled feeding, and regular playtime to promote a more active lifestyle.
While viewers were charmed by Sasha’s food obsession, some expressed concern, unaware of her weight-loss efforts. “Oh my god, that makes me sad,” one viewer commented, while another quickly defended Sasha, writing, “FYI, y’all, this cat was HUGE when she was adopted. She desperately needed a good home and has lost so much weight already!”
Fans also shared stories of their own cats’ weight loss struggles, with one commenter writing, “This is like our cat, who we rescued at nearly 33 pounds. Now he’s down to 9 kg, and it’s taken 4 years to lose the weight slowly and safely.”
Chu expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support, saying, “It’s really sweet how everyone is so supportive of Sasha. I love reading all the encouragement and messages from people who share their own experiences with their cats’ weight issues. I’m so happy that Sasha and Sage have been able to make such a positive impact on so many people.”
