If you enjoy cuddling with your dog or pampering your beloved cat, you’ll want to check out the new Cats & Dogs exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. This exhibition delves into our bond with these wonderful animals through over 250 artworks and designs, featuring pieces from renowned artists like Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco de Goya, and Pierre Bonnard. The exhibition runs in Fed Square until July 20.
The exhibition is organized thematically, with dogs displayed on one side and cats on the other. As you explore the space, you’ll encounter representations of working dogs and cats, as well as themes of mythology, religion, and cats in popular culture. The collection includes paintings, prints, drawings, textiles, decorative arts, and fashion from Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America.
“People have shared domestic life with cats and dogs for thousands of years,” said Tony Ellwood AM, Director of NGV. “This exhibition showcases our close relationships with these animals through over 250 works from the NGV Collection, combining critical insight with a sense of humor. Whether you’re a dedicated dog person or a devoted cat lover, there’s something here for everyone to appreciate.”
Notable highlights include the iconic ‘Chat Noir’ art nouveau poster by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen from the late 19th century, designs by Alexander McQueen, and works from First Nations artists.
Visitors are encouraged to share photos of their pets in the Pet Portrait Gallery. Additionally, NGV and ACMI will feature a selection of cat and dog moments from film, along with a film program set for 2025.
Admission to the exhibition is $16 for adults and $8 for children aged 5 to 15.
