Authorities in Hoffman Estates are actively seeking a large cat reported loose in the area on Monday evening. The animal has been identified as a caracal, an endangered species protected under international law, which is rarely found in the United States.
The caracal was spotted near Della Drive and the Hilldale Golf Course, prompting concerns about its presence in the suburban neighborhood. The origins of the animal remain unknown at this time.
The Hoffman Estates Police Department has expressed a commitment to ensuring the animal’s safe relocation to an appropriate zoo or wildlife facility that can provide proper care. Residents are urged to call 911 if they encounter the cat.
