Winnipeg cat owners are on high alert following the discovery of yet another slain feline in the city’s west end. The police have labeled the death as “suspicious” and are actively investigating the alarming trend of dead cats turning up in the area.
On Thursday, police collaborated with animal services to investigate the grisly find on Simcoe Avenue. The situation has raised concerns among residents, particularly as the number of deceased cats, especially in the Point Douglas neighborhood, has increased.
Krista Blahut, who discovered the remains of several murdered cats, expressed her fears, stating, “It’s not just vehicles and coyotes that are dangers out there. There are people, especially in this area, who are actively hunting cats.”
Earlier this week, Blahut guided reporters through Pritchard Park, where she found five mutilated or dismembered cats along the river. Veterinarians have indicated that the injuries observed are inconsistent with typical animal attacks, suggesting human involvement. “These ones are intentionally done by at least one person,” Blahut confirmed, citing veterinary assessments.
In light of these troubling events, the Cat Action Team Winnipeg is urging cat owners to keep their pets indoors. Blahut advised residents in the Point Douglas area to be especially cautious. “If you see friendly cats in the area, bring them inside and contact the humane society to determine their ownership,” she said, emphasizing the vulnerability of any friendly cat at this time.
As the investigation continues, local authorities urge all cat owners to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their pets.
