In an amusing twist on pet personality traits, one cat mom is making a strong case for Maine Coon cats as the canine equivalents of the feline world. Traditionally, dogs are celebrated for their extroverted, energetic, and social nature, while cats are often seen as solitary creatures. However, some cats, particularly the Maine Coon breed, exhibit behaviors that blur these distinctions.
On September 25, Instagram user @maxiecoon shared a video outlining five humorous reasons why Maine Coons could easily be mistaken for dogs. One notable characteristic she highlighted is their impressive size, which certainly gives them a dog-like appearance. Yet, it’s their vocalizations that may truly surprise viewers. While many cats produce growl-like sounds, Maine Coons have been known to emit growls that resemble those of dogs. The video even features instances of her cats barking—a claim that may seem unbelievable until heard.
Another point made in her video is the responsiveness of her cats when called. Anyone familiar with cats knows the common experience of calling a feline companion, only to be met with indifference. However, Maine Coons reportedly come when called, which aligns more closely with dog behavior.
Interestingly, this isn’t an isolated observation. Maine Coons frequently appear on lists categorizing cat breeds that resemble dogs. Other breeds such as Ragdolls, Bengals, Siamese, and Sphynx also exhibit dog-like traits, including loyalty, friendliness, and intelligence, making them well-suited for families and households with other pets.
While each cat has its own unique personality, choosing from these breeds may increase the likelihood of adopting a feline with dog-like characteristics.
