HOUSTON — Pet owners in Houston’s East End are on high alert after several dismembered cats were found in the neighborhood. Authorities suspect the cause isn’t human, but rather wild animal attacks, possibly involving coyotes.
One of the disturbing incidents occurred at the intersection of Park Drive and Lockwood, where Samuel Gordon discovered the remains of his beloved black cat, Malder.
“I found part of him cut in half,” Gordon shared, still visibly shaken. “It hurt me a lot. He was like a part of my family. And it disgusts me to see something like that.”
Gordon’s cat is not the only one to meet a similar fate. Several other mutilated cats have been reported in the surrounding area, prompting concerns from residents like Gordon, who wonders if something more sinister is at play.
Authorities, however, are leaning toward a different explanation. The Houston SPCA, which has been investigating the incidents, believes the deaths are likely the result of wild animal attacks, specifically pointing to coyotes as potential culprits. The area is known for having a high feral cat population, which may be attracting predators.
“After an initial investigation, it is believed this was caused by an animal attack, possibly coyotes,” the Houston SPCA stated.
Despite the official explanation, Gordon remains skeptical. “I don’t think coyotes would do that,” he said.
A third report of a similar nature has been filed, and the Houston SPCA, based on its ongoing investigation, maintains that these incidents appear to be consistent with animal attacks.
In response to the deaths, Gordon has decided to keep his other two cats indoors, worried they may face the same fate if allowed to roam freely.
The Houston Police Department supports the findings of the Houston SPCA, echoing that there is no evidence to suggest human involvement in the cat deaths.
The Houston SPCA encourages the community to continue reporting any cases of suspected animal cruelty or unusual animal behavior, reminding residents that the investigation remains open in case further developments emerge.
Here is the full statement from the Houston SPCA:
“Earlier this week, a Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigator responded to the East End after a cruelty report was filed regarding two deceased cats that were found dismembered. After an initial investigation, it is believed this was caused by an animal attack, possibly coyotes, as the area where the incident occurred has a very high population of feral cats.
“Houston SPCA was made aware of a third similar incident. Based on the current facts gathered, it is believed that this too was caused by an animal attack. The case will remain open pending further investigation if warranted.”
Authorities urge pet owners in the area to remain cautious, particularly with small animals, as coyotes are known to roam urban environments in search of food.
