SAN LEON, Texas — Authorities are conducting a chilling investigation into an appalling case of animal cruelty in San Leon, Texas. The discovery, made at a residence on the 800 block of 29th Street, has shocked even the most experienced animal welfare officers. The homeowner is now facing criminal charges related to the horrific conditions found at the property.
The investigation was triggered by a search for Kaylee Humburger’s missing cat, Cheesecake. What began as a simple search for a lost pet turned into a nightmare when the truth behind the property owner’s activities was revealed.
On social media, the homeowner presented herself as a compassionate animal rescuer. However, according to Bobbie Medley, founder of Forgotten Pet and Wildlife Rescue, this was far from the truth. “She fooled people for years,” Medley stated, reflecting the disbelief and anger that many feel.
Kaylee had entrusted her cat to the property owner for what was supposed to be a brief period. “The plan was only for a month,” Kaylee explained, adding that she was scheduled to pick Cheesecake up on Thursday. However, when she and her friend Baylee visited the property on Saturday, they were told the cat was gone. The owner allowed them onto the property, and what they found was beyond their worst fears.
Grizzy Castillo, founder of Grizzy Hood News, decided to investigate further. “I was horrified. I’ve never stood on crushing bones as I walked. It felt like a holocaust for cats,” Castillo said, describing the horrific scene. She and others discovered numerous dead animals, with cages filled with decomposing carcasses and empty food cans scattered around.
“People watching this were disgusted,” Castillo continued. “People were horrified. People were crying.” The emotional toll of the discovery was immense, with witnesses and neighbors expressing their shock and heartbreak.
Local residents Brandon and Elizabeth Hoover, who live nearby, were equally stunned. “It’s heartbreaking really. You can see the cans out here,” Brandon said, pointing to the evidence of neglect. Elizabeth added, “There has to be some kind of code violation that would have sparked an investigation. Then you would have gone in there and seen there was an animal cruelty case.”
The investigation also revealed that the homeowner had been living in her truck, as the house itself was deemed uninhabitable. Medley expressed frustration that previous warnings had not been heeded. “We had neighbors notifying officials to come look, come investigate please,” Castillo noted. “Maybe those outcries were not heard.”
The only known survivors of this horrific situation were a few cats that may have escaped from their carriers and a horse. Medley, still haunted by the images of what she saw, lamented the simple actions that could have saved lives. “All she had to do was open the cage, they would have had a chance.”
As the investigation continues, the owner of the property, now dubbed the “hoarding house of horrors,” faces criminal charges for the unimaginable suffering inflicted on these animals. The case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift action in preventing such tragedies.
