CHILOQUIN, Ore. — Amid the chaos of the Copperfield Fire raging through Klamath County, a heartwarming rescue unfolded on September 3rd. While grappling with the intense blaze and managing fire camp operations, firefighters made an unexpected and touching discovery: a litter of four kittens.
The initial rescue occurred at the Klamath County Fairgrounds, where firefighters were stationed. During routine checks of the fire camp, a firefighter discovered a tiny kitten hidden beneath a truck in the parking lot. The crew swiftly ensured the kitten was safe and made comfortable.
Later that day, another kitten was found in a different parking area within the Chiloquin fire camp. Both kittens were promptly taken to the fairgrounds for immediate care from the fire staff. Efforts quickly ramped up to locate a suitable foster home to ensure the kittens’ well-being.
The following morning brought a further surprise. Under the same truck where the first kitten was discovered, rescuers heard faint meowing. Upon inspection, two additional kittens were found hiding in the truck’s undercarriage. It became apparent that these kittens were from the same litter and had endured a harrowing journey from Salem to Chiloquin and ultimately to Klamath Falls.
The tiny kittens, still with their eyes closed and in critical need of care, were gathered and tended to by the fire staff. Thanks to their prompt response, the kittens were kept safe until they could be transferred to a local foster home. A nearby veterinarian, who had recently taken in a mother cat that had lost her own litter, provided a surrogate for the orphaned kittens. The mother cat has since been nursing the kittens, giving them the care they urgently required.
All four kittens are expected to find new homes soon. Three of them will be adopted by members of the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Team 3, who plan to welcome them into their homes once they are weaned from their surrogate mother.
