The South Pacific County Humane Society has temporarily suspended all intakes of cats and kittens due to a widespread respiratory illness affecting more than half of the shelter’s feline residents. This decision comes as the shelter and its foster homes are operating beyond full capacity.
The shelter announced that, for the health and safety of the animals currently in their care, they are unable to accept any new cats or kittens until further notice. This includes strays, litters of kittens, or any other feline intakes. However, the humane society is offering support to those who find cats in need, providing assistance with supplies such as food and litter, even though they cannot take the animals in.
In response to the situation, the shelter is planning special adoption events once the infection is under control, aiming to find loving homes for the current residents. These efforts will help create space for other cats and kittens in need of care.
The shelter remains open for adoptions and surrenders by appointment only, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Additionally, services like stray drop-offs, spay/neuter vouchers, and the pet food program are still available during open hours.
Community members can view the available cats and dogs on the shelter’s website, beachpets.com. An approved adoption application is required before scheduling a meet-and-greet with any of the animals.
The humane society expresses deep regret over the situation and extends gratitude to the community for their ongoing support and understanding during this challenging time.
