In an extraordinary display of feline compassion, a cat named Andrei quickly stepped in to help a starving kitten he heard crying outside his home. Just three days later, Andrei has taken on the role of a “father figure” to the young ginger kitten, who bears a striking resemblance to him.
The heartwarming story was shared on Reddit last Friday by user @NBonaparte1769. The post includes an endearing photo of the two cats napping together, tightly cuddled as the kitten adjusts to his new surroundings.
“My ginger boy heard a kitten mewing in our yard, and I came out to see what was going on. I took the little one in, and this is them three days later,” read the caption accompanying the viral post.
Nikolai, Andrei’s owner, spoke to Newsweek about the touching moment. He recounted how he was watching YouTube with his AirPods in, with Andrei comfortably sitting on his lap, when suddenly Andrei’s ears perked up, and he dashed outside.
“I was curious, so I took off my AirPods and followed him. Immediately, I saw a tiny, starving kitten mewing for help. It broke my heart. Andrei went over and sniffed him. I was a bit worried he might get aggressive, but he was so gentle,” Nikolai shared.
He continued, “The kitten was hesitant at first, but he warmed up to us. I gave him food and water, and after a bath, he seemed okay. He had been with us for just an hour, and he had already stolen our hearts. I named him Nico, and he’s a very happy and active boy. Andrei can barely keep up with him, but he’s like a father figure to Nico.”
While Andrei and Nico’s bond formed almost instantly, most cats typically require more time to adjust to a new kitten in the household. However, this special connection between the two ginger cats serves as a touching reminder of the compassion animals can show.
