A small fire in a Paterson apartment on Thursday morning led to the dramatic rescue of multiple cats, with two requiring resuscitation, according to Deputy Chief Andrew Ricciardi of the Paterson Fire Department. Tragically, some of the cats did not survive the incident.
Ricciardi reported that approximately 20 cats were inside the apartment at the time of the fire. Between 10 and 12 cats were successfully rescued, while two of them suffered from smoke inhalation and were revived on the scene by emergency responders.
Paterson Animal Control also responded to the scene, confirmed Animal Control Officer John DeCando. He stated that the surviving cats were returned to their owner, who plans to place them in family care.
The fire, which was contained to the kitchen area, did not result in any injuries to civilians or firefighters, Ricciardi noted.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
