SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — In a heartwarming turn of events, Cosmo, a 15-year-old orange cat, has been reunited with his family after going missing for two years, thanks to a microchip, the assistance of a delivery driver, and the efforts of the Sevier Animal Care Center.
On Wednesday morning, the Sevier Animal Care Center posted a touching photo of Cosmo alongside his overjoyed owners. Cosmo, who disappeared from his Seymour home shortly after the death of another family cat, was found by a delivery driver in the same neighborhood from which he had vanished.
The Sevier Animal Care Center revealed that Cosmo’s family initially believed he had left their home to grieve or find a place to pass away. However, the discovery of Cosmo was made possible due to the microchip implanted in him, which allowed the shelter to contact his family and confirm his identity.
Microchipping remains a crucial tool in reuniting lost pets with their owners. According to the Sevier Animal Care Center, only 6% of lost cats and 11% of lost dogs are reclaimed nationwide from animal shelters. Microchipping services are often provided by veterinarians and shelters, with the Sevier Animal Care Center offering this service for $20 without the need for an appointment.
For those who have moved or changed phone numbers, it’s important to update the information associated with a pet’s microchip by contacting the microchip registry, as advised by PetCo.
