Houzz Inc, a leading platform in home design and remodeling, has released its 2024 U.S. Pets & the Home Study, revealing intriguing insights into how pet owners are integrating their furry friends into home renovations. The survey, which interviewed over 1,000 respondents, underscores that nearly half of homeowners (48%) consider their pets a significant factor when upgrading their living spaces.
Pet Priorities in Home Design
According to the study, pet owners are increasingly incorporating features tailored to their pets’ needs. Key areas of focus include pet-friendly products and materials (34%) and specific design elements like dedicated spaces for pets’ beds or feeding stations (22%).
The study provides several noteworthy findings:
Pet Ownership Demographics: A majority of respondents have a single pet (44%), while over a quarter have three or more (26%). Dogs are the most prevalent pets (83%), followed by cats (33%), birds (3%), and fish (3%).
Common Renovation Projects: Flooring updates emerged as the most frequent renovation project among pet owners (51%), with landscaping, wall or baseboard upgrades, and door frame replacements also being popular (34%, 34%, and 31%, respectively).
Built-In Features: Nearly 10% of renovating pet owners included built-in features for their pets. Top additions were feeding stations (39%) and outdoor enclosures like catios (34%). Other popular built-ins included sleeping or relaxation areas (21%) and grooming stations, play structures, and litter boxes (18% each).
Inspiration for Pet-Friendly Renovations
For those planning their own remodels, Houzz’s study suggests several affordable and practical improvements:
1. Pull-Out Feeding Stations: Incorporating a pull-out feeding station in a kitchen island can be a cost-effective way to keep floors cleaner and more organized.
2. Dog Washing Stations: A dedicated area for washing dogs, especially for those with larger breeds, can be a valuable addition. While not essential for all, it is a highly sought-after feature for many pet owners.
3. Catios: For cat owners, a catio provides a secure outdoor space for cats to enjoy the outdoors safely. Although expensive, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, it is a desirable feature for many cat lovers.
4. Litter Box Rooms: A separate room for a litter box, especially one equipped with a robot litter system, is a highly coveted feature for those looking to keep their living areas clean and odor-free.
5. Dedicated Dog Rooms: Creating a special room or kennel for dogs, such as one built under the stairs, can offer a safe and comfortable space for pets when they are home alone.
