A large-scale rescue operation is currently in progress in Rokeby after reports surfaced of multiple stray cats being killed in the Greater Hobart suburb. Birchgrove Feline Assistance, a volunteer-run cat rescue organization, initiated the operation last week following a distressing call about the grim situation.
The charity described the situation as “critical” after discovering additional cat deaths since their initial visit. One local resident reported counting more than 76 stray cats on a single street, highlighting the severity of the problem.
Birchgrove Feline Assistance has been working tirelessly for several days to trap and rescue the stray cats, with a particular focus on preventing further breeding. Many of the cats taken in are pregnant, while others are in poor health. One of the rescued cats was found with broken teeth and a missing ear, reflecting the harsh conditions these animals are enduring.
The urgency of the operation is clear, as Birchgrove Feline Assistance emphasized the need to act quickly before the stray cat population explodes with new kittens.
In addition to the rescue efforts, the RSPCA has launched an investigation into the situation. A spokesperson for the organization revealed that inspectors are seeking information regarding multiple deceased animals found in a reserve at 63 Duntroon Drive, Rokeby, during August 2024. They are urging anyone with information, particularly CCTV footage, to come forward and assist with the investigation.
Once the cats are trapped, they will receive care, rehabilitation, and desexing before being rehomed, offering them a chance at a better life away from the dangers they currently face.
