WHITE OAK, Pa. (KDKA) — A man is facing allegations of abandoning a cat and seven kittens at an already full animal shelter in White Oak, sparking concern among local animal welfare advocates.
The White Oak Animal Safe Haven took to Facebook on Wednesday, asking the public for assistance in identifying a man who allegedly left a tote containing two kittens, estimated to be between six to eight months old, and a carrier with a mother cat and her four nursing kittens at their shelter. The shelter emphasized that they are currently at capacity and unable to accommodate additional animals. A message on their website underscores this, stating, “WE ARE FULL. We are not accepting surrenders at this time.”
“Abandonment is illegal, even at a shelter, regardless of the intentions,” the shelter stressed in its social media post. “Please, if you know something, say something.”
The shelter, a non-profit organization, appealed for foster families and expressed gratitude that a few individuals have already responded to their call for help. However, this incident is part of a troubling trend of animal abandonment in the Pittsburgh area this summer.
In June, White Oak Animal Safe Haven reported that a dog had been left in a crate outside the shelter’s doors during a heatwave. More recently, earlier this month, the foster-based rescue Cross Your Paws took in six severely underweight and dehydrated puppies that had been dumped in Westmoreland County.
While White Oak Animal Safe Haven has managed to find foster homes for the latest group of cats, they continue to stress the ongoing need for foster families year-round, saying, “We’re always looking for foster families 24/7/365.”
