The Furness branch of the RSPCA has sharply criticized negligent pet owners after a cat under their care endured a harrowing birthing experience.
Pepper, a young cat categorized as ‘semi-feral,’ came into the RSPCA’s care several weeks ago. Recently, she gave birth to two kittens, but only one survived.
Veterinary Intervention Needed
Pepper’s ordeal took a critical turn when it became apparent that she was not feeding her remaining kitten. Concerns arose that additional unborn kittens might still be inside her. Subsequently, Pepper was rushed to Wild Side Vets in Barrow, where a C-section was performed. The procedure uncovered one deceased kitten and successfully delivered another, which, unfortunately, also died later that day.
Fundraising and Criticism
After the surgery, which cost £800, the RSPCA Furness branch launched a fundraising campaign to cover the expenses. They also sought donations of wet kitten food in an effort to save the remaining kitten, but it too passed away on August 18.
In the wake of these tragic events, the Furness branch expressed their gratitude to donors but did not hold back in their criticism of irresponsible cat owners. A statement posted on their Facebook page read: “Pepper has endured a traumatic pregnancy, childbirth, and surgery because her owner failed to neuter her. At less than a year old, this is likely not her first litter.”
The branch conveyed their frustration over the continuous issues with unwanted litters and unspayed cats. “We are tired of seeing posts about pregnant cats and kittens in need of homes. Stop being irresponsible and get your cats neutered,” they urged.
They also pointed out that raising a litter of kittens costs more than neutering, and offered financial assistance to help with the procedure. The post concluded with a call for pet owners to prevent further suffering by ensuring their pets are spayed or neutered.
