Maldives Immigration has issued a summons to a Bangladeshi national following serious allegations that he has been killing cats in the Malé area and using their meat to prepare food products. The accused, identified as 32-year-old Arfat Hossain, is reportedly residing in the country illegally.
According to an official from Maldives Immigration, the summons was issued after a report surfaced linking Hossain to the alleged slaughter of cats and the use of their meat in food preparation. The agency has given Hossain five days to present himself.
The allegations gained traction after a video circulated on social media showing a local confronting Hossain near a parking zone in front of Marry Brown on Boduthakurufaanu Magu. In the video, when questioned about his presence in the parking lot with plastic bags, Hossain claimed he was using them to transport cats to his home.
The individual who posted the video also provided footage taken outside Hossain’s residence, claiming that neighbors had seen cat body parts in the vicinity and heard the cries of cats. “Entering the lane where Arfat’s house is located, it’s clear that the area has been adapted for food preparation. The ventilation pipe, which runs from the house, is a key feature,” the narrator of the video explained.
The video further alleged that Hossain had previously sold burgers and submarines under a logo written in English, although this branding has since been removed. “These are items we give to our children for school snacks. It’s unacceptable that we could be deceived in this way. We are deeply concerned,” the video stated.
The Maldives government has recently intensified efforts to address the issue of undocumented expatriate workers and violations of immigration laws. In recent months, Maldives Immigration and the Maldives Police Service have conducted several raids, during which expatriates were found preparing food products in extremely unhygienic conditions.
