In a devastating turn of events, a Crestmead, Queensland family is reeling after the painful deaths of their three cats within a span of just three days, a tragedy they believe was caused by a deliberate poisoning.
Emily Gardner-Hudson, 21, arrived home at the beginning of the month to find her sister’s cat, Theodore, deceased in the family’s backyard cat pen. What was initially suspected to be a natural death quickly became alarming as the family’s other two cats soon exhibited severe symptoms.
Gardner-Hudson recounted the harrowing experience to Yahoo News, describing the sudden and brutal death of her cat, Cuddles. “She seemed fine in the morning, but by 11:56 am, she was dead,” Gardner-Hudson said, her voice trembling. “There was so much blood; it was like a hose. It was the most traumatic sight I’ve ever witnessed.”
The third cat, Pebbles, was rushed to the vet, where she was diagnosed with neurological damage before being euthanized to alleviate her suffering. Gardner-Hudson described the family’s grief as “raw” and “unbearable,” highlighting the sudden and horrific nature of the incident.
The deaths are believed to be the result of either rat bait or aspirin, which was reportedly thrown over the family’s fence in a plastic bag. The family has contacted local authorities and the RSPCA, but investigations have yet to pinpoint the perpetrator. The Logan City Council has indicated that evidence is insufficient to take action, despite the vet’s confirmation of poisoning and the discovery of the bag.
Under Queensland law, administering poisonous bait to harm animals is a criminal offense, punishable by fines up to $48,390.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of pet baiting incidents across Australia. Recent years have seen a spate of similar cases, including poisoned entrails found in Sydney parks and poisoned dogs in Melbourne, one of which led to the death of a Chihuahua earlier this year.
Gardner-Hudson has issued a heartfelt plea to pet owners across Australia to remain vigilant. “Please keep a close watch on your pets and be aware of any signs of poisoning or illness,” she urged. “Our pets showed no symptoms before it was too late. We are devastated by this loss.”
As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert, hoping for justice and safer environments for their beloved pets.
