On what turned out to be the hottest day of the year, a cat and her six kittens were found abandoned in a cardboard box without water, left at a closed school in Brentwood, Essex. The temperature had soared to 32°C (90°F) by midday on Monday when the animals were discovered on Sawyers Hall Lane.
Staff from Hopefield Animal Sanctuary came to the rescue, saving the cat and her kittens from what could have been a tragic fate. The sanctuary, in a social media post, expressed concern over the dire situation, stating that the animals had been “dumped like rubbish” and were at risk of “dying a painful death.”
Despite their abandonment, the sanctuary’s marketing officer, Tracy Tristram, assured that the cats were now in good hands. “They are currently receiving lots of love and care from the team, and they’re all very sociable and friendly cats, so have clearly been used to being with humans,” Tristram said.
The kittens, three tabby and three black, are estimated to be between four and six weeks old. They were discovered by Xico, an animal caregiver at the sanctuary, who stumbled upon them during his lunch break.
The mother cat has since been named Aurora, inspired by the Northern Lights display that occurred the same night the cats were found. For now, the sanctuary is not accepting adoption inquiries for Aurora and her kittens as they continue to receive care and attention.
