Blaine, MN – Kevin Michael Halverson, 57, has been charged with animal cruelty and mistreatment following allegations that he poisoned his tenant’s cats due to a dispute over their presence on the property.
On Friday, Halverson appeared in Kanabec County Court facing one count of animal cruelty and two counts of mistreating animals. The case unfolded after a Kanabec County deputy responded to a complaint on July 27 from J.E.S., a tenant in Halverson’s building. The tenant, a retired veteran who works with the Veterans Administration to manage and rehome stray cats, reported suspicions that Halverson had been poisoning the cats.
According to the criminal complaint, J.E.S. had informed Halverson of his intentions to relocate the cats to a shelter, but Halverson expressed dissatisfaction with the tenant’s efforts, explicitly stating he did not want the cats on the property. The property manager confirmed that Halverson had requested assistance in poisoning the cats by adding antifreeze to their food, a request that was declined. Despite this, the property manager later observed Halverson adding antifreeze to a trailer where the cats frequently sought shelter.
When confronted, Halverson allegedly admitted his desire to remove the cats from the property. J.E.S. reported the cats’ health deteriorating, with several dying in his care. Law enforcement is investigating the incident further, highlighting the severity of the situation and the impact on the affected animals.
