In a heart-wrenching incident, a beloved community cat known as Hobocat is set to have his eye removed following an attack while he was sleeping in his flowerpot bed. The incident has galvanized the local community in Reepham, where Hobocat has been a cherished presence for the past year.
Hobocat’s story began about a year ago when a photo of him living rough in a garden was posted in a local Facebook group. Despite efforts to find his owner, none emerged. As a result, a group of compassionate neighbors from nearby flats took it upon themselves to care for him, affectionately dubbing him “Hobocat.”
One of these neighbors, Kath Harrold, recalled the early days of Hobocat’s presence in the community. “He slowly started to trust people and now he is so loving,” she said. However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Early in Hobocat’s journey, Harrold noticed that he was “on three legs” and believed he had been hit by a car. Determined to help, she borrowed a cat trap, took him to the vet, and had him neutered and treated.
Hobocat’s recovery saw him becoming a well-loved fixture in the community. “He sits on the pavement greeting the early morning dog walkers and chats to everyone,” Harrold said. In winter, the neighbors provided him with an insulated igloo and a self-heating blanket, which he adored.
Hobocat’s peaceful life was shattered at around 11:30 PM on a recent Sunday when Harrold heard the “dreadful noise” of him being attacked by an out-of-town tomcat in his flowerpot bed. The severity of the attack left Hobocat with a grievously injured eye. After seeking advice from a vet, Harrold learned that his eye was so badly damaged that it needed to be removed.
The surgery, scheduled for Friday, comes with a hefty price tag of £1,449. Despite the financial burden, Harrold is determined to ensure Hobocat receives the care he needs. To that end, she has launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of the surgery.
Although Hobocat has always been a “community cat” with “friends everywhere,” the attack has prompted Harrold to offer him a permanent home. “He will always remain a community cat,” she said, underscoring the strong bond that has formed between Hobocat and the residents of Reepham.
The community’s response to Hobocat’s plight has been overwhelmingly supportive. Harrold’s GoFundMe campaign aims not only to cover the cost of the surgery but also to provide for Hobocat’s ongoing care and ensure he continues to enjoy a safe and loving environment.
Hobocat’s story is a testament to the power of community and the deep bonds that can form between humans and animals. Despite the challenges he has faced, Hobocat has found a network of caring individuals who are committed to his well-being. As he prepares for his upcoming surgery, the support and love of the Reepham community will undoubtedly help him through his recovery and into a brighter future.
