Cat enthusiasts are gearing up for the much-anticipated Cat Expo 2024, set to take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from next Friday. The three-day event promises a plethora of activities and exhibits dedicated to feline aficionados.
A recent survey highlights the growing investment in cats by their owners, revealing an average monthly expenditure of nearly HK$1,900 per cat—an increase of 26% compared to the previous year.
Running from August 2 to 4, the expo will host 200 exhibitors and 410 booths. Attendees can expect a diverse range of cat-related products and activities.
The Exhibition Group, organizing the expo for the second consecutive year, has extended invitations to cat enthusiasts and vendors from various regions, including mainland China, Macau, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. They will showcase a wide array of cat-themed art supplies, toys, and lifestyle items.
General Manager Shirley Chu Sut-ling anticipates a high turnout, citing a surge in cat ownership as a driving factor. “The monthly turnover in the cat market has reached HK$190 million, exceeding HK$2.2 billion annually,” Chu noted. “With the increase in the number of cats per capita, market enthusiasm is expected to continue growing, especially in pet health sectors such as medical products and insurance.”
A recent online survey conducted by the group, involving over 1,000 cat owners in Hong Kong, revealed that more than 80% prefer purchasing pet products locally due to quality and convenience. The survey also found that nearly 90% of cat owners experienced increased expenditure over the past year, with average monthly spending reaching HK$1,889. Rising costs in economic and medical care were cited as contributing factors.
“Previously, owners primarily focused on food, but now they also care about other aspects such as whether the food is organic, its ingredients, the freshness of the meat, and various supplements,” Chu explained. “People are increasingly willing to invest in quality products as they view cats as part of the family.”
The survey also showed that over 60% of respondents owned two or more cats, and more than 12% had four or more cats—a slight increase from the previous year.
Following a successful debut last year, which attracted 180,000 visitors, organizers are optimistic about maintaining a similar level of interest this year. Attendees can look forward to various perks, including the chance to win a round-trip ticket for two to Japan, South Korea, or Taiwan upon spending HK$250 with a single receipt using a Mastercard at specified booths.
The expo will feature a “Cultural Creative Art Zone” showcasing cat-themed creative brands and a “CFA Cat Breed Parade,” presenting over 100 cats from 20 breeds for close-up interactions.
Entry to the Cat Expo 2024 will cost HK$30 for adults. Admission is complimentary for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and children under one meter tall.
The Cat Expo 2024 promises to be an exciting event for cat lovers, with a wide range of activities and products celebrating the beloved feline companions.
