Torremolinos Council has taken a significant step towards the management of feral cat colonies by entering into a partnership with the Málaga Feline Association. This initiative comes in response to the identification of 66 feline colonies in Torremolinos, currently home to an estimated 719 feral cats. Although 600 of these cats have already been successfully sterilised, the actual number of cats roaming the streets is believed to be considerably higher due to abandonment and lost pets contributing to new litters.
Recognising the urgency of stricter controls and management practices, the mayor emphasized the need for comprehensive measures. The agreement with the Málaga Feline Association outlines a multi-faceted approach, including a responsible adoption programme, sheltering of abandoned or newborn cats, socialisation efforts for housed animals, and the capture of feral cats.
In a commitment to support this effort, Torremolinos Council has pledged financial backing for the plan. This includes funding for sterilisations, microchipping, deworming, and veterinary treatments. Additionally, resources will be allocated for the training of local police, fire brigade personnel, and other municipal departments to effectively handle feral cat colonies.
The mayor underscored that the council’s primary objective is the advocacy, protection, and promotion of responsible pet ownership and adoption. The initiative also aims to encourage volunteerism and citizen engagement in animal welfare activities throughout the community.
