Pet owners who leash their cats for walks are facing criticism from animal experts, with the RSPCA expressing concerns that the practice could cause stress to the animals.
The trend of walking cats on leads has gained popularity among some owners who fear their feline companions might get injured or harm other animals if left to roam freely. This concern has led to a significant increase in searches for cat leashes, including kitten harnesses, with up to 6,000 queries per month, according to research conducted by pet insurers Waggel.
CEO Andrew Leal noted the growing divide among cat owners regarding whether to keep their pets indoors or allow them outdoor access. Reasons cited for keeping cats indoors include protection from road traffic, diseases, and concerns about their impact on local wildlife.
However, the RSPCA cautioned that walking cats on leads may not be suitable for all felines. They highlighted potential stress factors such as the inability to escape from stressful situations, particularly when confronted by off-leash dogs.
“We understand social media has contributed to the popularity of this trend, but it’s crucial for owners to assess whether it is in the best interest of their individual cat,” the RSPCA stated.
The debate continues as pet owners navigate the balance between allowing their cats some outdoor freedom while ensuring their safety and well-being.
