Miami County officials took decisive action on Monday, July 15, 2024, seizing 43 cats from Our Farm Sanctuary following multiple complaints about the animals’ welfare. The Miami County Animal Shelter, acting on credible reports from volunteers, conducted a search at the sanctuary alongside Animal Control Officers and the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.
Reports indicated that many of the cats, among more than 100 found on the premises, suffered from severe upper respiratory infections due to unsanitary and overcrowded conditions. Dr. Paige from West Milton Veterinary assisted in assessing the cats’ health during the operation.
This intervention came after prior visits by Miami County Animal Control officers in May 2022 and August 2023, prompted by volunteer complaints of similar issues. Despite warnings to improve conditions and reduce animal numbers, the situation did not sufficiently improve, leading to the execution of a search warrant.
Robert Craft, Director of the Miami County Animal Shelter, emphasized the challenges faced by rescues in maintaining adequate care under overwhelming circumstances. “Even with the best intentions, many times rescues find themselves in a position where they are overwhelmed and unable to provide quality care for their animals,” Craft stated.
Charges against Our Farm Sanctuary are pending as authorities work to address the ongoing care and treatment of the remaining cats. Craft expressed gratitude to community members who reported concerns, underscoring the importance of public vigilance in animal welfare.
Following medical evaluations and necessary treatments, including spaying and neutering, the seized cats will be available for adoption once cleared by the shelter. Potential adopters are advised that adoption applications will open once the cats are deemed fit for adoption.
