In Westbrook, Maine, the Meow Cat Lounge on Main Street has become a haven for feline lovers and a hub for cat adoptions. Founded by Anne Beal, the lounge has collaborated with 10 rescue organizations across the state, facilitating the adoption of 274 cats since its inception a year ago.
The lounge operates as a public-facing foster home, where visitors pay a small fee to interact with cats in a spacious, air-conditioned environment equipped with Wi-Fi and an array of cat toys. Beyond casual visits, patrons can participate in various activities such as pottery nights, tarot card readings, belly dance lessons, and yoga sessions.
Anne Beal, who has dedicated over 30 years to animal shelters and rescue work, manages the lounge with a team of part-time staff, rarely taking a day off. Despite the challenges, the lounge hosts community events for organizations like nursing homes and Big Brothers Big Sisters, offering them free access to the facility.
The Lounge also features a gift shop showcasing items from 30 local artisans, including cat-themed toys, T-shirts, art, and books. For Beal, the mission is clear: to maintain a supportive environment for cats in need of homes, connecting them with caring individuals across Maine.
As one visitor, Amanda Santamore, described her lunchtime experience at the lounge with her daughter and friends, the appeal of the Meow Cat Lounge is evident. Despite facing allergies at home, visitors like Bella Martin find solace in knowing they can return to the lounge any time for a feline fix.
Through its collaborative efforts with rescue groups spanning from Aroostook to York Counties, the Meow Cat Lounge continues to play a vital role in the community, enriching lives both human and feline alike.
