On Monday, police in Hong Kong apprehended a man identified by the surname Fan at Lek Yuen Estate, following accusations of animal abuse on a cat at Lucky Plaza in Sha Tin. The incident, which occurred last Friday night, gained attention after a social media post circulated accusing the man of attacking a ginger cat.
According to reports from the Hong Kong Animal Post, the man allegedly pinned the cat to the ground before fleeing the scene when confronted by a passer-by. In response to public outcry, officers seized the clothes worn by the suspect during the incident and initiated an investigation under the police’s specialized unit for animal-related crimes.
Fortunately, initial examinations conducted by authorities revealed no visible injuries on the cat. The animal has since been returned to its owner and is undergoing further medical evaluations.
Under Hong Kong’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, individuals convicted of animal cruelty offenses could face up to three years in prison and a fine of HK$200,000. The cat, reportedly aged between three to four years old, belongs to a vendor at a nearby fish stall, as reported by Hong Kong Animal Post.
The arrest underscores the seriousness with which Hong Kong authorities address cases of animal abuse, aiming to uphold animal welfare and enforce strict penalties against offenders.
