Cat lovers, if you think your adorable ball of fur at home is the epitome of cat goals, then Corduroy the cat will surely have you in awe. This gorgeous, fabulous feline holds the title of the oldest living cat in the world. At 121-years-old in cat years, which translates to an impressive 26 years in human years, Corduroy has aged gracefully, just like fine wine.
A Record-Breaking Life
Officially recognized by Guinness World Records, Corduroy has exceeded the typical life expectancy of a cat by over 10 years. His remarkable journey began in 1989 when his owner, Ashley Okura, first met him as a kitten. Since then, they have spent almost every year together, exemplifying true pet-owner goals.
“We’re bonded. I’m used to his routine, and he has a wonderful temperament and personality. Having him around all this time has been great,” Ashley shared with The Dodo. She attributes Corduroy’s longevity to his freedom to play and explore in the wilderness. “I honestly believe that by keeping Corduroy’s claws, he was able to defend himself and go hunting outside. I think it’s good for the cat’s mental health to go outside and feel like a cat,” she explained.
A Tale of Two Titles
What makes Corduroy’s story even more remarkable is that he has been crowned the world’s oldest cat twice. Initially honored in 2014, Corduroy was later stripped of his title when a 26-year-old cat named Tiffany II was recognized. However, following Tiffany II’s passing, Guinness World Records re-named Corduroy the world’s oldest cat this summer.
Corduroy’s life is a testament to the special bond between pets and their owners and the joys of letting a cat be a cat. His story is a source of inspiration for cat lovers everywhere, proving that with love, freedom, and a bit of wilderness, our feline friends can lead long, fulfilling lives.
